It’s now official: Red Sox acquires veteran pitcher from the New York Mets…….

The Red Sox acquired the veteran pitcher from the New York Mets.

The Red Sox boosted catchers Connor Wong and Reese McGuire on Friday by acquiring Tyler Heineman from the New York Mets for cash.

To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox also called up right-hander Max Castillo for assignment.

Heineman played in 22 big league games between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays last season and also played in 42 games in Triple-A. The 32-year-old is hitting .237 in the majors in 2023, has a .383 on-base percentage and is batting .218 overall in 104 MLB games over four seasons.

Heineman is the latest catcher the Red Sox have brought in to bolster their organizational depth at a position that became a problem late last year when McGuire went on the injured list.

The Red Sox also added veterans Roberto Perez and Mark Kolozsvary, and while Heineman has minor league opportunities and can be bounced back and forth between the bigs and Triple-A, he is on the 40-man roster, making him the first baseman. up if either Wong or McGuire goes down with an injury.

Previously, Boston’s best catching options in the upper minors were Jorge Alfaro and Ronaldo Hernandez, both catchers with limited defensive ability, and Caleb Hamilton, who scored good points defensively but lacked the same offensive end. All three players are now in different organizations, and Hamilton signed a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angels earlier this week..
