The 60-year-old Portuguese took charge in May 2021 and led Roma to the European Conference title a year later and to the Europa League final in 2023. last week, city rivals Lazio were eliminated from the Coppa Italia.

Owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin praised Mourinho for his passion and commitment as a boss,

“We will always have great memories of his management, but we believe that an immediate change is necessary in the best interest of the club”,they added in a statement.

Mourinho received a second consecutive red card in the Lazio defeat and later compared himself to Harry Potter, suggesting his profile “raised expectations” what Roma could achieve.

That result was followed by a 3-1 league defeat by AC Milan on Sunday, which left Roma five points behind fourth-placed Fiorentina and led to his sacking.

Victory in the 2022 Conference League secured Romand’s first major European title and earned Mourinho huge support from the club and fan base.

But after being beaten by Sevilla on penalties and in the Europa League final last season, the Italian club have taken just five points from their first six Serie A games in a poor start to the current campaign.

The former Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Tottenham manager rejected a “crazy” offer to leave last summer, as Roma currently sits in 16th place in the table.
